Colin Michael Hall is currently Visiting Professor and Docent in Geography, University of Oulu, Finland; Visiting Professor in the tourism program, Department of Marketing and Tourism, School of Business and Economics, Linneaus University, Kalmar, Sweden; Adjunct Professor at Sunway University, Malaysia; Eminent Scholar at Kyung Hee University, South Korea; and a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Hospitality and Tourism, University of Johannesburg. He is the author or editor of over 90 books as well as author of over 300 journal articles and 400 book chapters. He is one of the most frequently cited tourism researchers. In 2009 he was named the Elsevier ScienceDirect ‘For Great Thinking’, Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences category winner.
Prior positions in Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere include Professor in Tourism at the University of Otago where he was also head of department for six years; Professor in the Department of Management, Marketing and Tourism at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand; Professor of Tourism and Service Management at Victoria University of Wellington; Guest Professor in the Department of Service Studies at Lund University Helsingborg campus, Sweden; Visiting Professor at Sheffield Hallam University, UK; Visiting Professor, Centre for Tourism Studies, University of Eastern Finland; Adjunct Professor, Taylor's University, Malaysia; and Honorary Professor in the Department of Marketing, Stirling University, Scotland.
THE GLOBAL VOICES AT THE GHANA CENTRE FOR CHINA STUDIES
On August 13, 2025 Colin Michael Hall, renowned Professor in Tourism and Marketing at Massey University, shared with the Ghana Centre for China Studies his perspective on why the UAE is appealing to Chinese tourists.
The UAE has emerged as one of the go-to-destinations among Chinese tourists this year, surpassing traditional favourites, like some European cities and the Maldives. According to data from the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), in 2024 Dubai welcomed 824, 000 Chinese tourists, a 31 percent increase compared to the previous year.
It is a major transport hub which means it acts as a stopover point for a start - and which usually also means some major price attractions with respect to flights. There are also a range of attractions there and it is "China friendly", which should also be seen as a plus.
