China International Supply Chain Expo

The China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) is the world’s first national-level exhibition dedicated to supply chains. Organized annually by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) with support from the Chinese government, the first edition of the expo was held in Beijing on November 28 to December 2, 2023. China through the expo aims to strengthen global cooperation on industrial supply chains and help bolster global economic recovery.

‘‘Despite heightened geopolitical rifts and protectionism, the expo is increasingly becoming an international public resource. At the first two editions of the CISCE, more than 400 trade deals and tentative agreements worth over $42 billion were signed. The expo provided a platform for scores of exhibitors from various countries to exchange ideas, share resources and strengthen cooperation along global industrial and supply chains.

Through various platforms, including the CISCE, which aims to promote more secure, stable, open and inclusive global industrial and supply chains, China demonstrates its commitment to opening up and economic integration. In 2024 alone, China hosted 3,844 economic and trade events.

According to a CCPIT report, China's total exhibition space expanded by 10.1% year on year in 2024, reaching 155 million square meters. This growth enabled Chinese enterprises to reach out globally, contributing to foreign trade.

China's foreign trade reached a record high in 2024, with exports rising 7.1% to 25.45 trillion yuan ($3.5 trillion) and imports growing 2.3% to 18.39 trillion yuan from the previous year.

For China, the CISCE and the entire exhibition industry are essential for promoting high-standard opening up, advancing Chinese modernization comprehensively and driving high-quality economic development.’’ – This is an excerpt from the Ghana Centre for China Studies (GCCS) publication titled ‘‘China Intl Supply Chain Expo pushes back against protectionism’’ published in a joint collaboration with the China Internet Information Center. Here’s more on the second edition of the CISCE

‘‘Since China began reform and opening up more than four decades ago, the Asian powerhouse has introduced and implemented various initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation with the rest of the world. Thanks to the Chinese government's unflinching commitment to wider opening up, China has transformed from an economic backwater to the most connected hub in the global economy – accounting for 18% of global GDP and becoming the world's largest trading economy. China is currently the main trading partner of more than 140 countries and regions, and has signed 21 free trade agreements with 28 countries and regions. Despite global geopolitical challenges, rising protectionism, and trade tensions that impede globalization, China continues to foster international trade through initiatives like the CISCE, aiming to share opportunities with the rest of the world.

As the saying goes, "Unity is strength, division is weakness." The world is witnessing attempts at decoupling and disruptions in global industrial and supply chains that benefit no one. At the second CISCE, and all relevant stakeholders are presented with the opportunity to beef up international cooperation. This move is essential for recalibrating economic globalization. For example, in 2023, almost 3,000 trade restrictions were imposed worldwide – approximately five times the number in 2015. World Bank data show that by the end of 2024, global trade will register the slowest half-decade of growth since the 1990s.’’ – This is an excerpt from the Ghana Centre for China Studies (GCCS) publication jointly published in collaboration with the China Internet Information Center, and republished by Yahoo Finance.
